- Contributions are assumed to arrive at the end of each month, and entered interest compounds monthly.
- Months are counted as whole months from today; a target date mid-month rounds up.
- If the required amount feels high, try extending the date or lowering the goal — the numbers respond immediately.
How to use this calculator
- Name your target amount: $8,000 for an emergency fund, $20,000 for a wedding, $60,000 for a house down payment.
- Enter what you have saved toward it today.
- Pick the date you want to reach the goal.
- Optionally enter the interest rate your savings earn — a high-yield savings account rate is realistic; leave 0 to ignore interest.
- Read your required monthly and weekly amounts. If they do not fit your budget, extend the date or lower the target and watch the numbers move.
How the calculation works
months = days until target ÷ 30.4375, rounded up future value of current savings = current × (1 + r/12)^months required monthly = (target − future value) × r/12 ÷ ((1 + r/12)^months − 1) (with r = 0: required monthly = (target − current) ÷ months)
The formula is the ordinary-annuity payment solved for a future value: it credits your current savings with monthly compounding, then computes the level contribution that exactly closes the remaining gap by your deadline. Contributions are assumed to arrive at the end of each month.
Worked example
Input
Goal: $20,000. Saved so far: $5,000. Deadline: 24 months from today. Savings earning 3% APY.
Result
Future value of current savings: about $5,309. Still needed: $14,691. Required contribution: about $594.72 per month — or $137.24 per week — to hit $20,000 on time.
Assumptions and important notes
- Contributions arrive at the end of each month and interest compounds monthly at the entered annual rate.
- Months are whole: a deadline 10 days away counts as 1 month; mid-month deadlines round up.
- A year is 365.25 days ÷ 12 ≈ 30.4375 days per month for date conversion.
- The rate is held constant; real savings rates change with the market.
Frequently asked questions
What interest rate should I enter?
Use the APY your savings vehicle actually pays — often 3–5% at high-yield savings accounts and money market funds, near 0% at traditional checking. For goals under a year or two, interest barely moves the answer; for multi-year goals it starts to matter.
Why is my monthly amount slightly lower with interest?
Two effects: your existing savings compound toward the goal, and each contribution you make earns interest for its remaining months. At 3% over two years, that trims roughly $30/month off a $20,000 goal versus saving into a 0% account.
What if I can’t afford the required monthly amount?
Three levers, in order of preference: extend the deadline (most powerful — doubling your time more than halves the monthly cost), lower the target, or move the money to a higher-yield account (small effect, zero effort). The calculator is designed for exactly this kind of what-if testing.
Should I save this goal in the same account as my emergency fund?
Keep them separate. Mixing goals makes progress invisible and tempts raids on the emergency fund for the vacation fund. Separate savings accounts (or "buckets", which many banks now offer) give each goal its own number — and its own celebration when it fills.
